Reds Slug Their Way To Early Lead, Beat Brewers

Brewers 1, Reds 5

The Brewers once again found themselves in a hole that they could not dig out of. Joey Votto homered in the first and Brandon Phillips hit a 3-run home run in the third for a 5-0 lead. That was the last hit for the Reds, but they caused enough damage to win the game.

Alex Presley hit a solo home run for the only Brewer run of the night. The Reds bullpen came in and shut the Brewers down, breaking their streak of 23 straight games of their bullpen giving up a run.

The Reds took the first game of the series by jumping to a 7-0 lead after two innings. For the Brewers to have success, they need to get the first batter out more often. Their opponents have an on base percentage of .467. The Reds went 3 for 7 with a walk, a .500 OBP.

The scheduled starter for the Brewers, Wily Peralta, was placed on paternity leave. Tyler Cravy was called up to take his spot in the rotation. Cravy pitched in 5 games for the Brewers earlier in the season, all in relief.

Cravy was able to get the leadoff hitter out, and the next guy. However, Votto lined one over the fence in center field to put the Reds on the board and they led 1-0 after the first inning.

Jay Bruce led off the bottom of the second with an infield single and came around to score on a double by Adam Duvall. The Reds had a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Zack Cozart led off the third with a ground-rule double and Votto drew a one-out walk. Phillips hit a 3-run home run to left to give the Reds a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Presley hit his second home run of the series to lead off the fifth inning. That was all that the Brewers could muster, but they made it a 5-1 game.

That was all of the scoring for the night. The Brewer bullpen was spectacular, going 4 innings allowing just one base runner, a walk in the eighth inning. The Reds bullpen was almost as good, also going 4 scoreless innings while allowing 4 hits and a walk.
