Since the Brewers did not do well last week and I spent most of the week in Jacksonville watching the Shuckers play, my Player and Pitcher of the Week are coming from the Shuckers.
Player of the Week
Cooper hit .360 with 8 RBI in 7 games last week. He drove in the only run in the Shuckers’ 3-1 loss to the Suns on Thursday. Cooper’s big hit came on Friday when he laced a bases loaded double down the right field line to break a 1-1 tie. He would be thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple, but he drove in 3 runs to help the Shuckers to a 4-1 win.
The Brewers drafted Cooper, an Auburn first baseman, in the 6th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. The first baseman has moved up steadily, earning mid-season promotions in his first 3 seasons. He is hitting .319 on the season and will be playing in the Southern League All-Star Game this week.
Pitcher of the Week
Archer gave up a pair of runs in an inning of relief on Tuesday, but came back with 3 scoreless innings in a spot start on Friday. He struck out 4 of the first 5 batters he faced and 5 overall. The Shuckers would win the game, but he did not get a decision.
The Brewers drafted Archer in the 21st round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Tennessee Tech. The right-handed reliever is 14-13 with a 3.51 ERA in his 4 Minor League seasons. He has advanced a level every year and has pitched well at each level. This season he is 2-2 with a 4.25 ERA and he has 41 strikeouts in 42.1 innings. Archer was added to the Southern League South Division All-Star roster for Tuesday’s All-Star Game.
