Angels 4, Brewers 5
The Brewers slugged three home runs, including two from Chris Carter, to complete the largest comeback for the Brewers this season. The Angels were up 4-0, but Carter hit a 2-run home run in the third, then Lucroy and Carter went back-to-back in the fifth. Junior Guerra made his first Major League start and got through 6 innings to get the win. The Brewers have now won a season-high three games in a row.
The Brewers took the first game of the series with a combination of good pitching by Jimmy Nelson and a couple of 4-run innings. The bullpen faltered a bit, but the Brewers hung on for the win. Tuesday’s game featured Nick Tropeano of the Angels going up against Guerra, a recent call-up for the Brewers.
Guerra began his first MLB start with a strikeout of Yunel Escobar. Rafael Ortega reached on a bunt single, moved over to second on a ground out and scored on a single by Albert Pujols. Pujols was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. The Angels took a 1-0 lead with the Brewers coming up in the first.
Cliff Pennington drew a one-out walk in the third and went to second on a single by Escobar. Ortega drove in Pennington with a single to center. Both runners moved up on a balk and Trout drove them in with a single to right. Guerra got Pujols to ground into a double play to end the inning with the Angels leading 4-0.
Lucroy hit a two-out single in the bottom of the third. Carter hit a two-run home run to center field for his team-leading 8th of the year. The Brewers cut the Angels’ lead in half to 4-2 after three innings.
Villar drew a one-out walk and Lucroy crushed one out to left field for his first home run of the season to tie the game. Carter hit his second home of the night and ninth of the season to give the Brewers the lead. Nieuwenhuis drew a walk to bring up Colin Walsh with one out. Walsh grounded out, but Nieuwenhuis advanced to second with two outs. Ramon Flores flied out to end the fifth inning with the Brewers leading 5-4.
Guerra’s night finished after six innings, right after he shut down Trout, Pujols, and Calhoun in order after the Brewers took the lead. He gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and a walk while striking out 3 in 6 innings.
Michael Blazek came in to pitch in the seventh and walked Andrelton Simmons to lead off the inning. He went to third on a single by Carlos Perez. C.J. Cron pinch hit for the pitcher and drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with nobody out. Pennington was out on a soft line drive to second base for the first out. Blazek got out of the inning as Escobar grounded into a double play. The Brewers led 5-4 at the stretch.
Jeremy Jeffress came in to save the game in the ninth. A nice play by Hernan Perez at third that was helped by a nice scoop at first by Carter was part of a 1-2-3 inning and the Brewers have won 3 straight games.
