Bats Go Cold As Brewers Lose To Cards

Brewers 0, Cardinals 7

Jaime Garcia needed only 104 pitches en route to a complete game, 1-hit shutout. The Brewers only managed 3 base runners all day and the Cardinal bats remained hot. It was a tough road series for the Brewers, but they did manage to win one of the three games.

The Brewers came into the finale against the Cardinals fresh off of their 6-4 win last night. Domingo Santana was the hero of the game with his 2-out, 2-run home run in the ninth inning to give the Brewers the lead. Chase Anderson went 6 innings without giving up an earned run and Jeremy Jeffress picked up the save for the Crew.

Wily Peralta took the hill against Garcia. Peralta was hoping to have a better outing than his first two of the season.

Randal Grichuk led off the second inning for the Cardinals with a single to left. Yadier Molina smashed a double to left and Grichuk advanced to third. A sacrifice fly to left to drive in Grichuk. After another fly out to left, pitcher Jaime Garcia came up with a runner on second and two outs. Garcia hit a single to left to put runners on the corners. Matt Carpenter doubled to right field and both runners came in to score. Peralta finally got out of the inning on a ground ball to first. After two innings, the Cardinals led 3-0.

Brandon Moss drew a one-out walk in the third. Grichuk then hit a two-run home run to center field. Peralta got out of the inning with no further damage, but the Cardinals led 5-0 after three innings.

The Brewers, meanwhile, were not even threatening to score. Going into the sixth inning, Keon Broxton was the only base runner. He struck out in the third inning, but took first base because of a wild pitch. Domingo Santana finally got the first Brewer hit in the sixth inning with a two-out single, but he was stranded at first.

Chris Capuano came in to pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning and set the Cardinals down in order.

Matt Carpenter hit a leadoff double to right off of Capuano and Jeremy Hazelbaker followed that up with a two-run home run to right. Grichuk drew a two-out walk and moved over to third on Molina’s base hit. Capuano got Wong to fly out to center to end the inning, but not before the Cardinals extended their lead to 7-0.

Garcia came out to pitch in the ninth to attempt to have the first complete game of the season. He got Broxton looking for the first out, Santana grounded out for the second out, and Gennett was called out for the final out of the game. Garcia pitched a complete game, 1-hit shutout against the Brewers, striking out 13.
