Brew Crew Fever Podcast Episode 007

This week I take a look at the first couple of weeks of the Brewers season.

The Brewers started the season at home against the Rockies and the Cubs, then took the show on the road to Toronto and Cincinnati. Jonathan Villar had a rough opening week, but got things settled down. Travis Shaw, Manny Pina, and Eric Thames had a lot of success so far, as did pitchers Wily Peralta, Chase Anderson, and Jimmy Nelson.

The Brewers are in second place just a game behind the Reds. If they can continue their hot road trip, they may find themselves in first place soon.

  1. Villar settled down? Shaw has had a lot of success? I guess we should say Arcia and Broxton are raking then… Don’t be fooled by the Brewers PR machine.

Let’s take a close looks at Villar’s number from September through today. That is the real Villar. Hasn’t hit since September. That includes winter ball, WBC and spring. Once the 20M he passed up settles in, he will be lost for the season. Not strong enough mentally to recover.

    1. My comment about Villar settling down had to do with his defense. He had a horrible start defensively, but he is playing better now. As far as Shaw goes, he got off to a great start. He hit .333 with 5 doubles and a home run in the first week. I would call that a successful start. He has cooled off since.

I’m not too worried about Villar right now. I’m seeing some improvement at the plate, though the numbers aren’t showing them yet. He’s making more consistent contact, which is what he needs to do. Twenty-one strikeouts already is unacceptable. He needs to put the ball in play and get on base.

      1. Thanks for clarifying! Makes better sense. I hope you are right and I’m wrong about Villar. I want Shaw to do well also because we gave up one of my favorites out of the pen. Go Brewers!
